A visual travelogue-cum-dialogue between two giants of modernist photography.
This publication presents a dialogue between the Mexican photographs of Helen Levitt (1913-2009) and those of Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004). The two photographers first met in New York in the spring of 1935; Cartier-Bresson had just spent a year in Mexico, while Levitt had only just embarked on the portraits of New York street life for which she would become celebrated. Levitt was enthralled by the Frenchman's Mexican photographs, which she saw at the exhibition Documentary & Anti-Graphic Photographs at the Julien Levy Gallery that same year. In 1941, fascinated by Cartier-Bresson's work, Levitt decided to visit Mexico with Alma Agee, wife of novelist James Agee, and their son Joel. Throughout her long photographic career, this was Levitt's sole trip abroad. This volume gathers around 60 prints by Cartier-Bresson and Levitt, as well as documents retracing their respective steps in Mexico.

Cette publication présente un nouveau corpus d'oeuvres de Cindy Sherman qui poursuit ses explorations du genre et du portrait en remontant à ses premiers travaux des années 1970. À travers 36 photographies, l'artiste colle des parties de son propre visage pour construire l'identité de divers modèles, en utilisant la manipulation numérique pour accentuer les aspects superposés et la plasticité. Le livre comprend également un texte de Cindy Sherman relatant son processus en studio, offrant un aperçu intime de sa réflexion sur le travail.
Les vies des documents - La photographie en tant que projet est le premier d'une trilogie de projets de recherche et d'exposition produits par le CCA sur le médium de la photographie, entre oeuvre d'art, outil de recherche et document, comme moyen d'investigation de l'environnement bâti. Organisé par Bas Princen et Stefano Graziani, ce projet vise à disséquer la pratique d'artistes et de photographes dont le travail a contribué à définir les étapes de transformation de la discipline au cours des cinquante dernières années sur des sujets spécifiques, de la notion de paysage à la complexité de l'archive en tant que format de projet, entre autres. Tillmans' photographic explorations of human connection and tangibility in dialogue with our new virtual presen.
The observation of people--their bodies, movements, relation to surroundings--lies at the core of the diverse oeuvre that German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968) has amassed over the past three decades. Today, these haptic relations and interactions are undergoing massive shifts in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and technological change, as the necessity of social distancing and the migration of everyday life into virtual space transforms how we interact with one another.
Wolfgang Tillmans: Sound Is Liquid reflects on the photographer's oeuvre against the backdrop of these societal developments. Accompanying an exhibition at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (MUMOK) in Vienna, Austria, this catalog features a wide selection of Tillmans' work from his early photographs produced in the pop-culture milieu of the 1990s to his acclaimed photographic abstractions, his high-resolution images of the globalized and digitalized reality of the early 21st century, and photos taken shortly before and during the coronavirus pandemic.

Carla Juaçaba développe sa pratique indépendante de l'architecture et de la recherche depuis 2000 à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil. Son bureau participe actuellement à des projets publics et privés axés sur le logement et les programmes culturels. Elle a travaillé avec l'architecte Gisela Magalhães, principalement dans des expositions liées aux arts indigènes brésiliens et aux musées historiques. Parmi ses premières oeuvres, elle est connue pour une série de maisons - Rio Bonito (2005), Varanda (2007), Minimal (2008) et Santa Teresa (2014) - des scénographies d'exposition et surtout le pavillon éphémère appelé Humanidade, à Rio de Janeiro, conçu avec la scénographe et metteur en scène Bia Lessa conçu pour la conférence des Nations Unies à Rio de Janeiro en 2012. Elles ont créé un pavillon temporaire fait d'échafaudages récupérés dans les chantiers alentour, et surmonté de la phrase "The Future we Want". Elle a également été invitée à la Biennale d'architecture de Venise 2018 avec le projet Ballast et a construit l'une des chapelles du Vatican.

This third publication dedicated to the artist's sculpture follows Sculpture 1969-1985 and Sculpture 1986-2000. It guides the reader chronologically through the genesis of Cragg's most recent works and traces the relationships between them, revealing the artist's rigorous studio practice.
Cragg built upon his already substantial body of work during this period, and his creative energy and evolution have often been the focus of art criticism. A reexamination of an exiled German artist's final works at war's end.
German draughtsman George Grosz (1893-1959) created his last major series of paintings and watercolors, the «Stick Men», beginning in the mid-1940s in reaction to the Holocaust and the other atrocities of the Second World War. The deployment of atomic bombs in Japan and the threat of a Third World War further deepened what the artist termed his «despair, hate and disillusionment.» In his final works, he drew his figures as dehumanized, famished beings aimlessly wandering through a contaminated, post-apocalyptic world. As the first exhibition of the «Stick Men» series following the artists' death, this catalog contradicts the notion that Grosz had become «soft» and apolitical during his years spent in the United States. Rather, this series is the culmination of the political and artistic convictions of a lifetime of struggle: a timely and relevant legacy even today.

Ce catalogue accompagne une exposition au Museum Goch en Allemagne, la première exposition présentée hors du Royaume-Uni consacrée à la photograpie documentaire britannique des années 60 à 2020. On y retrouve des noms parfois oubliés ou récemment redécouverts, comme John Myers, Tish Murtha, Homer Sykes ou Peter Mitchell, aux côtés de noms connus comme Martin Parr ou Chris Killip.

This volume is dedicated to the early life and career of the brilliant young artist Georg Ehrenfried Gross (1893-1959), who would later become known as George Grosz. Known for his politically charged paintings and caricatural depictions of Berlin life in the 1920s, the youthful Gross had a long way to go before changing his name and becoming the most popular and sharp-tongued chronicler of the Weimar Republic. Gross made his first oil paintings in 1912 while still a student, and by 1914 was working in a style deeply influenced by Expressionism, Futurism and popular illustration. Presenting over 50 works made between the years 1904 and 1917, all but a few exhibited for the first time ever, the inaugural exhibition of Das kleine Grosz Museum, and this accompanying catalog, trace the artistic and biographical trajectory of this great artist's journey.
